Setting up a dust management system is all about air flows and the piping required. With power tools spread around a workshop you may find yourself having to manage dust extraction with a collector across the room from the power tools. In this case, you might have to mount piping on the walls or ceiling in order not to clutter the workspace. In this blog entry, we’ll look at the types of pipes used in a robust dust management system.
Straight PVC Pipe
This type of pipe is easy to mount on walls or ceilings using brackets as it’s very lightweight; it’s generally used to build the frame of a dust management system. The smooth surface and long straight lengths mean excellent airflow and less work for your collector. To attach power tools, y-connectors with blast gates can be added at intervals.
Flexible Wire-Reinforced Clear PVC Hose
This workhorse of any workshop dust management system comes in all sorts of widths and lengths. Use it to attach your power tools to the main dust management frame. The flex nature means it can be fed around obstacles to the power tool and then held in place with hose clamps. Being clear, any obstructions can be easily seen and removed.
A more specialized type of "flex hose" is Anti-Static PVC wire-reinforced PVC hose. As the name implies, this type of hose prevents static electricity from building up by absorbing the charge made by dust and wood chips as it passes through the hose. In situations where there’s lots of fine dust, this type of hose can help prevent accidental dust fires.

Polypropylene Flexible Hose
This is a great choice for heaters, defrosters, and air conditioning applications owing to its superb heat resistance, but it also has a place in a dust management. Lightweight and wire-free, this accordion-like hose can be stretched and then compacted as needed. As an overhead hose, it can be attached to blast gate linked to the collector. Turn on the collector, stretch the hose down to clean off a workspace then compact it again when finished.

Universal Small Port Hose
This type of dust hose is used to attach handheld power tools and modern sanding blocks (with extraction ports) to small ‘shop vac’ style dust extractors. They usually come with a few standard connection ports, one of which will fit the dust port of any popular-brand hand-held power tool.
