Five Types of Blast Gate

Over the past year the POWERTEC customer service team have answered hundreds of questions concerning dust collection systems. Feedback to our research and development team has allowed us to design better blast gate solutions and also address specific workshop needs. Our recent Integrated blast gates have been game-changers, while threaded blast gates cut down on clutter and help streamline dust management airflow.

Super-Hot and New: Integrated Blast Gates (2-1/2” & 4”)

Integrated blast gates are still very new, and they’re catching on fast. To quote some recent 5-star Amazon reviews: “These POWERTEC gates close 100% and gave my collector back its power” & “These gates click open and closed nicely, giving you a nice tactile confirmation.”

Integrated blast gates are lightweight alternatives to self-cleaning aluminum gates. Here, air pressure created when the gates are 3/4s-closed cleans out any dust or debris from the gate track; also, there’s no air-pressure loss like on metal gates. How well do they work?

Threaded Gates

What’s special about these 4” gates is how they connect to flex hose. We added a threaded port that connects directly to flex hose with little-to-no air pressure loss. One less component and less weight. The first gate, the “70287 4” Threaded/Non-Threaded” connects to hose on one end, and to any tool that accepts a 4” OD dust port on the other side. The second gate, the “4” 70192 Double Threaded” connects two pieces of flex hose to make one long piece again.

ABS Blast Gates

Finally, there’s durable and cost-effective ABS blast gates. These are your grandfather’s blast gates! They work and have been on the job for decades in workshops. However, considering all of the new innovation in blast gate technology, it’s a good idea to weigh your options.

As a rule, we usually go with the heavier aluminum self-cleaning gates on tools that expel a lot of chunky, heavy chips, like a jointer/planer, while using more cost-effective Integrated Blast Gates on tools that produce finer dust. This helps to balance the cost of installing blast gates while staying ‘clog free.’

Good luck and work safe.
